Recently several changes have been implemented by IRCC in the Canadian student visa requirements. One of the significant update is the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). Effective from 22nd January 2024, most students now need to furnish a PAL from the province or territory where they intend to study. A PAL is applicable to bachelor’s degree, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Diplomas. Master’s and PhD programs are exempted from this requirement.

There are some new modifications in the Canada student visa application process. Let’s have a look at the announcements made by IRCC:

  • International students enrolled in study programs under a curriculum licensing arrangement will no longer qualify for a post-graduation work permit upon completing their studies.
  • Closed the Student Direct Stream (SDS).
  • Master’s degree program graduates will be eligible for three-year work permits.
  • International students need to graduate from a field of study linked to occupations with long-term shortages to qualify for PGWPs.

These fields of study requirements do not apply to university bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral graduates.

The fields of study are linked to fields with long-term shortages. These are

  • Agriculture and agri-food;
  • Healthcare;
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM);
  • Trade; and.
  • Transport.

Step-By-Step Guide

1.Take the English Proficiency Test

In order to get admission into Canadian Institutions, every international student must have to appear for the English Language Proficiency Test. IELTS or PTE is the most recommended Test for proficiency in English. One must score an overall score of 6.0 in IELTS and 60 in PTE to get admission into Bachelor or Diploma programme after 12th. For Master or Graduate Certificate programmes, the requirement is overall score of 6.5.

2.Choose your Course and Institution as per new requirement

The next step is to choose the course according to the previous education background and Interest. Only Designated Learning Institution (DLI) can admit the international students. Before going for any Institution, please check whether the chosen program is listed on IRCC website for PGWP.

3.Apply for The Offer Letter

After selecting the Institution, applicant needs to submit the application for offer letter. There is an application fee to submit the application which varies from $100-$250. Do not apply in single Institution. Keep one or two alternatives as backup. At the time of submission make sure that you have provided the correct information as mentioned in your documents. After receiving the offer, pay the tuition fees, receive the PAL letter, fee receipts and then pay for GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate which is CAD $20,635.

4.Apply for the Study permit

Now it’s the time to apply for Canada Study permit. You can apply online and then appear for the biometrics at the nearest VFS centre. The application must be accompanied by the letter of acceptance, Fee receipt, PAL letter, GIC, Passport and other documents required for application.
